As part of the WORDS IN WINTER FESTIVAL 2012
Ken Haley and John Harms in Conversation
In his second book, Europe @ 2.4 km/h, wheelchair traveller Ken Haley crosses the Continent the long way – from Russia to Portugal via the Arctic – and finds that Europeans are an endangered species.
Author of the critically acclaimed Emails from the Edge, Haley redefines the concept of the adventure holiday to embrace house-sharing with Norwegian bank robbers and taking on the house at Monte Carlo.
In Germany he discovers unsettling truths about a previously unknown branch of his own European family.
Having visited 131 countries at length, Haley is probably Australia’s most travelled journalist. Since his book was published,
Ken has become a journalism and ethics tutor at Swinburne University.
Upon asking whether to teach ethics you had to be ethical, he was told: “No – but it would help.”
This year Ken’s conversation partner will be sports writer and broadcaster John Harms.
He is the editor-at-large of the sportswriting site www.footyalmanac.com.au.
His books include Memoirs of a Mug Punter and Loose Men Everywhere and over the last five years he has published an annual edition of The Footy Almanac.
He appears on ABC TV’s Offsiders.
Not to be missed, this event covers adventure travel, international culture, local history and sports, all in one session!
